Your Urgent Action Is Needed to Support Full Funding of National Service! Contact Your U.S. Senators Today!

This week the House Appropriations Committee passed the FY08 budget for the Corporation for National and Community Service, the organization that administers national service funding. The approved budget reflects a number of significant cuts to national service, including a 21% cut to AmeriCorps State & National from FY07 to FY09 and a 17% cut to funding for individual state commissions' administration. Click here to view a chart of the House approved national service numbers.

The budget now goes to the Senate Labor H Appropriations Subcommittee, where a mark up is planned for Tuesday, June 19.

Contact your U.S. Senators today and let them know that you support full funding of national service! Ask them to contact the Senate Labor H Appropriations Subcommittee Leadership (Senator Harkin and Senator Specter), urging them to fully support and fund national service.

Talking points:

  • To fully support and fund national service, we are asking the Senate to adopt the following numbers in the FY08 budget:
    • $312 Million for AmeriCorps*State/National to maintain current portfolios and Gulf Coast recovery projects. If enacted, the current House level would have a major impact on the Gulf recovery efforts, as well as, programs throughout the country. (Current level appropriated by the House: $255 million) Please note: In FY2004, the Congress appropriated $312 million for AmeriCorps*State/National.
    • $20 Million for State Commission Admin to fully support the work and capacity of state commissions. $14 million will keep commissions at current levels. (Current level appropriated by the House: $12 million)
    • $31 Million for Innovation, Demonstration, and Assistance with a minimum of $10 million of the recommended funding being allocated through Program Development, Assistance, and Training (PDAT) grants to Governor's service commissions. (Current level appropriated by the House: $13 million)

The Senate needs to hear from you before Tuesday! Take a few minutes today to contact your U.S. Senators and urge them to advocate for full national service funding in the FY08 budget.
