Serve Michigan Update
A program of the ConnectMichigan Alliance and the Michigan Nonprofit Association

Issue #12
March 14, 2007

Your Immediate Action is Needed to Support National Service!
Two Action Items: Please Read Carefully

1. Ask your U.S. Representative to Sign on to the National Service Congressional Caucus letter

We are encouraging you to contact your legislator in the House of Representatives and ask that they add their name to the National Service Congressional Caucus letter. The letter (click here to read the full text) urges Congress to reject the funding cuts for AmeriCorps, Learn & Serve America, NCCC, Senior Corps and VISTA that were included in the Administration's fiscal year 2008 budget.

The deadline for signatures is tomorrow, March 15.

How to act:

  • Contact your representative in Congress and ask them to sign on to this letter.
  • If they agree, let their congressional staff know that they must contact Catherine Liao (Catherine.Liao@mail.house.gov) with Rep. David Price or Sarah Moore (Sarah.Moore@mail.house.gov) with Rep. Christopher Shays.

As of March 13, no member of the Michigan Congressional Delegation has signed on to the letter. Please make a call to your U.S. Representative today and urge them to sign the National Service Congressional Caucus letter.

2. Add your organization's name to the Voices for National Service letter

This letter (click here for the full text) is from the national service field - programs, services partners and community champions. It also asks the appropriators to reject the proposed cuts and to restore funding for all the national service programs.

The deadline for signatures is tomorrow, March 15.

How to act:

  • Email your organization's full name and the name of its CEO or Executive Director to info@voicesforservice.org.
  • Include the phrase "Add our Signature to the VNS letter" in the subject line.
