FEBRUARY 10, 2007 - MOUNT PLEASANT, MI - 118 students from Central Michigan University are preparing for the 2007 Alternative Spring Break program. This program takes students to various parts of the United States where they will volunteer in programs based in social service.
A recent grant program by CMU President Michael Rao has made the Alternative Spring Break program more accessible for students.$10,000 in travel grants will be available for this year’s group. This money will cover up to $100 of cost for each student after fundraising efforts. Participation in the trip typically costs $300, which covers transportation, food and lodging. With both sponsored and individual fundraising, the travel grant leaves student costs for the program at a minimum.
This year, CMU has identified 10 sites around the country, spanning from New York to Florida and Texas. Students will depart on March 4, and return on March 10.
Program Coordinator Jenny Limban says that she is excited to see what this group can do. A veteran of the program herself, Jenny knows first hand the affect this experience can have on college students.
“This is an amazing opportunity for a true service-learning experience,” said Limban. “The program allows for self discovery, and creates lifelong friendships.”
Students are currently involved in an orientation program which familiarizes them with what they will encounter over the break. This way, when breakers arrive at their sites, they can spring right into action. The Volunteer Center at CMU has also developed a reorientation program to keep their students involved when they return.
“The reorientation program provides students with local outlets for service and volunteerism,” Limban said. “We often find that students come back inspired and ready to volunteer locally. I’m excited to see what happens when we get these 118 through the program.”
